Pacific Fishing welcomes new editor

Brings significant experience in Pacific fisheries journalism

SEATTLE – Pacific Fishing, the business magazine for fishermen, is pleased to announce veteran fisheries journalist Wesley Loy will assume the editor’s chair of the 35-year-old media enterprise.

Loy takes the helm from the retiring Don McManman, who served eight years as editor and had a vital role in guiding the organization to industry-leading status. His contributions included the launch of the daily FishWrap e-newsletter.

"It’s not always the case that a seamless transition of a key position like editor of a well-respected, successful magazine can be realized, but we feel we’ve done just that with Wesley taking up where Don left off," said Peter Hurme, publisher, Pacific Fishing.

"Wesley brings a font of knowledge, and ideas to help PF spread its wings further into the online, electronic, and event spaces," Hurme said.

Loy, a native Tennessean, has a deep affiliation with Alaska. He worked for more than a decade as a business reporter for the Anchorage Daily News, covering commercial fisheries and other industries.

He is well known to Pacific Fishing readers as a longtime contributing writer, providing Alaska news articles and columns on the world’s most fertile wild catch fishing grounds.

In recent years, Loy also has worked as a freelance writer for other publications including Petroleum News and Alaska Business Monthly. In addition, he hosts Deckboss, a news blog on Alaska fisheries.

"My goal as editor is to further establish Pacific Fishing as an indispensible read for all North Pacific seafood industry participants and observers," Loy said. "The industry is highly complex, with a great heritage. Our readers can count on Pacific Fishing for reliable news and features to help sustain their businesses and to stay abreast of whatever challenges come over the horizon."

The October 2014 issue of Pacific Fishing will be Loy’s first as editor. He arrives just in time for our big Pacific Marine Expo issue in November.
